For nearly a century, family-owned Prout Funeral Home has been serving our neighbors in North Jersey during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Our History
Our story begins with Mike and Mae Prout. Originally a carpenter in Montclair, NJ, Mike put himself through the highly regarded “Renouard School for Embalmers” and earned his funeral director’s license in both New York and New Jersey in 1924. Initially, he worked out of the couple’s home until moving to the center of Verona to open one of the area’s first full-service funeral homes.
Mike & Mae continued to work side by side until 1970, when their eldest son, Frank and his wife, Jeanne assumed ownership of the firm. They continued to grow the business and in 1974 started construction on an addition that would double the size of the funeral home to include larger viewing rooms and office space.
The Prout legacy continues today under the guidance of third generation Bob Prout, his wife Meg, and fourth generation Steven and Julia. With an emphasis on innovation and technology the firm has added extensive audio-visual capabilities to enhance services and a solar installation, which helps to contain overhead. We even offer a Tesla Destination Charger for guests at wakes and funerals.
Our Contributions
We continue to be pioneers in funeral service innovation. We are known as leaders in our area for small business sustainability, with our cost-effective, solar-powered funeral home and solar educational tours. Mr. Prout is a nationally recognized speaker on integrating greener practices into the funeral business, natural burials and greener funerals.
